Goats have the capacity to adapt to a wide range of environmental conditions. They are hardy animals that can be kept on marginal land or rough terrain that is unsuitable for other types of livestock.
There are three different lines of products from goats – milk, meat, and fiber – and each has to make it to market in a different way. The goat industry is enjoying renewed popularity for its dairy production in Canada. Goat milk is collected by milk brokers and sent to processors to be made into cheese, yogurt, ice cream, fluid milk, butterfat, and powdered milk.
It’s on that background that BCDO started a goat demonstration farm to enable the communities to gain knowledge and skills in goat rearing, but also have quick access to different goat products.
- To create opportunity of self-employment to human resources, youths and women, who remains wastage in country; and to enhance their self-respect through appropriate management
- To increase income generation through scientific goat farming in traditional approaches
- To reduce a large volume import of goats from neighboring country
- Most people love goat meat, and demand of goat’s meat is in increasing trend in Uganda and globally, which is only possible to meet with adequate supply through commercialization
