Busesa Community Development Organization (BCDO) cattle fattening project is ready for rollout. The project was established to influence the community to take up cattle fattening as a business so that farmers can get away from rearing local breeds to the rearing of fast-growing breeds of cattle.
Dr. Lubega Richard, the BCDO Executive Director states that He feeds them on common local grass but occasionally gives high-quality pasture which he collects from farmers growing varieties such as Green Elephant grass and other leguminous animal feeding pasture. He added that he also sprays the bulls using the recommended acaricides to prevent ticks, and tsetse flies.
Cattle fattening is a source of quick income and increases in the number of cattle within a short period of time. BCDO intends to increase the number of cattle to more than 50 in five years. Currently, BCDO has 2 cattle which the community is learning from for free.
He however says that despite all this, BCDO is facing a challenge of limited water sources, pasture cutting machines, and jaggery used for fermenting pastures among others.
BCDO is also faced with a challenge of getting the improved breed of cattle (frassian). He also adds that frassian breed is not only difficult to get on market but also technical care.
You can support us to reach out to many farmers in Bunyoro and Uganda through;
- Supporting our solar water pump system
- Donating frassian breeds
- Offering technical training to our staff and the community.
- Donating a machine for cutting and processing animal feeds.
