Sustainable Solution to Grasshopper Rearing

BCDO to Harvest Grasshoppers in the Next Four Months

For a very long time, the grasshoppers have been available for harvest during April-May and November-December. In other months, one would find it impossible to have a meal with grasshoppers.

Today, Busesa Community Development Organization (BCDO) has made it possible for people to enjoy grasshoppers year in year out.  Long-horned grasshoppers are being bred and reared at BCDO  in a controlled way to make them available all year round.

According to the Executive Director for BCDO Dr. Lubega Richard, the first mother stock of long-horned grasshoppers in a greenhouse are fed on maize seedlings uprooted and fixed in containers fixed with wet cotton. “We expect them to have laid eggs which will hatch into young ones and will be harvested after 4 months.

Research has shown that grasshoppers are contained 20.6 grams of protein, 6.1 grams of fat and 3.9 grams of Carbohydrates. Studies also show that the protein content in grasshoppers comes pretty close to that of a similar-sized serving of chicken breast, but with a bit more fat.
