The Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development Hon. Matia Kasaija was excited to learn about BCDO’s fish farming project in Kajuma Village, Matale Sub-county, Kibaale District.
During his visit to BCDO on 6th July, 2019. While at BCDO, he visited the thee fish ponds that were stocked with catfish.
Matia said that farmers should interest themselves in starting a fish farming project as this is one of the ways to give a holiday to lakes that are currently being misused by fishermen.
He added that the parliament of Uganda is yet to come up with a bill that is going to discipline fishermen who use illegal fishing practices like fishing fish.
The Minister was very happy with BCDO for taking seriously the catfish fingerlings donated by the Government of Uganda through the Operation Wealth Creation (OWC). In May 2019, BCDO received 1000 fingerling through Kibaale District Local Government, production Department with the aim of improving fish farming demonstration site in the district. Currently, some of the fish in our fish ponds weighs between 500g to 1Kg at five months. BCDO regularly hosts farmers and organizations from different parts of Uganda to learn about fish farming.
